«Estos hallazgos proporcionan nuevas pruebas del papel que juega el intestino en esa enfermedad y aportan un modelo para estudiar su evolución desde el comienzo», destacó Ted Dawson, director del Instituto de Ingeniería Celular de Johns Hopkins.
El Parkinson es causado por la concentración de una proteína conocida como «alfa sinucleína» en las neuronas cerebrales. A medida que esas proteínas se concentran producen la muerte neuronal y dejan como secuela la pérdida de sustancia negra y agregados tóxicos llamados «cuerpos de Lewy». La muerte neuronal afecta la capacidad de moverse, pensar y regular las emociones en las personas enfermas.
